MERRY MARY'S WRITTEN WORKS
IN THE
SAN JUAN HORSESHOE

ChogOn rare occasions MaryJoy Martin has used her own name for her Horseshoe articles and columns, but for the most part she indulges in the ‘Shoe's zany custom of using witty and frequently outrageous pseudonyms for the work. Her distinctive style of Punchian satire and scientific hijinks gives her away to those who are dedicated readers, such as the NSA's minions, who have an expanding dossier on her under the category: "Known Subversives with Seditious Thoughts and Multiple Identities, Radicalized at age three (3)."

Despite the outlandish science, skewered history and politics flambé Martin creates for this periodical, which has been known since the Paleozoic as Carboniferous absurdity, Editor Kevin Haley has received serious inquiries from some readers who believe Martin's stories are fact. Och, the modern world! Such readers might be FoxNewless consumers, where the unbelievable palaver of talking heads and failed politicians is never questioned. Or they might have certain sections of their brains in jars or Petri dishes somewhere in the Mañana Republic. Or they might be too far under the influence of toxic waste to comprehend what they're reading. Or they might have far more significant levels of irrationality than is usual in the general population—self-imposed ignorance has been on the increase for the last 15 years, as the art of critical analysis and logical deduction is systematically replaced by religiously-flavored obtuseness gone wingers and bangers.

The feature articles and columns Martin has written for the Shoe cover several decades, so only a small sampling of her satire, parody, insanity, poetry, burrito recipes and intracranial trepanning instructions can be found here. A number of these works were previously published in other periodicals such as Destinations Magazine, the Rocky Mountain News, and more. The byline for the original stories is listed here, but all were written by MaryJoy Martin and are copyrighted by her. To read the stories click on the icon photo or title.
