Since her early days, MerryJoy has sculpted in wood, clay, and
stone. She has created only small sculptures, more often in a realistic style,
yet has done some avant garde works, many of which are in a series called
Spirit Sticks or Shaman Sticks or Fish Sticks. Clay subjects include life-sized
prairie dogs to prairie dog-sized bears. Animals and birds have dominated her
early sculpture, with oversized renditions of insects appearing now and then.
Her later works are intricate villages nestled in natural stone, with cast or
carved faces depicting spirits. Some samples of her work are showcased
below.

Mysterious
places such as Hovenweep have often been the inspiration for the artist's most
recent sculptures that combine clay and natural
stone. |
